Alan Scheurman began releasing music as Santiparro in 2010 after receiving the name from a Wixarika elder on a desert pilgrimage. Translated as “a lens that sees many things not usually seen,” the name also means “magnifying glass” — a likely nod, he says, to the gringo with big glasses more than any mystical bestowal.
His early recordings — including Get Well Soon on FM Dust — were shaped by a period of intense inner inquiry and time spent with Indigenous teachers. In 2015, Gnome Life released his self-produced debut LP True Prayer, with guest vocals from Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Kyp Malone, and others. That first collaboration with Will Oldham marked the beginning of a quiet thread — a kind of creative mentorship that would resurface at pivotal moments.
After years of study, fatherhood, and seasonal travel between Joshua Tree and the Amazon, Scheurman released The Talon in 2018, followed by the single Shadow Dancer in 2020. In 2023, he shared a cover of Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s Squid Eye, a gesture of reverence toward a songwriter whose presence has remained quietly formative..
2024’s Everywhere You Ever Were marked a reflective return. Now in 2025, Santiparro releases Chaos Incarnate, his second recorded collaboration with Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Written in response to a question Will once asked about reincarnation, the song arrives just ahead of a run of shows opening for him on tour.
